Can you describe your music?
When I DJ, the first thing I do is try to get a feel or a vibe from the people I’m playing for. It’s really important to me that they have a great time and I love to see them enjoying what I play. I really love to play rock, but also like mash-ups from Rn’B/Hip Hop with ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. They make great party tunes! If the mood is right, I sometimes also enjoy a more mellow side, with some easy listening and chill-out.

.

What are your inspirations?
Traveling, nature, spirituality, culture and LOVE.

.

If you were not a DJ, what/who would you be?
Definitely something that taps into the creative side of my brain. Fashion designer or stylist. Photographer or artist.music finder for movies/soundtracks.

.

What makes you feel a Quiksilver woman?
Quiksilver is a lifestyle and this is the lifestyle I live.

.

Describe your clothing style:
I guess I have so many different styles that it depends on how I feel in that moment. Sometimes I like to be relaxed and comfortable, sometimes I like to feel sexy and romantic and sometimes I like to let my rock n’ roll side out! I’d say a mix of bohemian, independent, rock n’ roll, 70s, 80s and even a little 20s.

.

Dress code for a fancy night out?
A nice dress with some hot boots (flat) and a rockin’ leather jacket. If it’s really fancy then I’d change the boots for a sexy pair of pumps.

Photo : gmcastelberg.ch

.
What is to be confident?
Feeling comfortable in your own skin, no matter what. Taking risks and just going for it!
.
What does timeless mean to you?

Like a fine wine, anything that gets better with age. Something that continues to carry meaning, year after year. For me, good music is timeless.

.

What is creativity?
Thinking outside the box. Being, seeing and feeling things and then realizing it.

.

The quote that defines you?
All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.

Dreams Become Things… cd launch

Hi there.. so I thought it was about time, that I took some time out to big up my amazing bandmate and backing vocalist HILS GRANGER. Altho she plays keys and B.V.s for me (Ellie), very exquisitely might I add, Hils is also a talented songwriter in her own right, and is launching her own CD/EP this coming week! The CD is called “Dreams Become Things”, which is a fantastic title, and truth I think for us all to remember that we can acheive great things!! It would be great to see some familiar Quiksilver women faces and attire down at the launch in Putney/South London, at the Half Moon, this Wednesday 29 April.. Things kick off just after 9pm.

Hils came out to Hossegor last summer with me and my band, when we played at the Pro-France surf event, and here we are just after our gig at the Regents Street Quiksilver store, which was the London launch of all things QSW!!!

To listen to Hils’ music and find out more about her own cd release, click on any of the pics and you will find yourself magically transported to her myspace page.. =) xx

Blood, Sweat and Popcorn!

The WAVERIDERS promotional tour moved across the water from Dublin to England last week after having reached Top 5 in the Irish Box Office.  Gabe and I went to work in Newcastle in the Northeast of England, which is Gabe’s hometown and the location of my first novel SERVE COOL.  The Odeon cinema in Newcastle had agreed to two screenings of the film but once our publicity drive started, the number of screenings grew to six due to demand for tickets.  We raced from newspaper to radio to television studio and back to newspaper throughout the week, securing two front covers stories, double page spreads, BBC radio, Metro radio and BBC News, where we were dubbed the ‘Posh and Becks of surfing’!  I mixed and matched the Quiksilver Women T-shirts and tops in ‘Purple Rain’ with black basics and purple accessories to jump from one photo call to the next, feeling less like Prince and more like a Princess.

On the Friday, we were welcomed at the stunning flagship Quiksilver Boardriders in Regent St. for a signing and TV interview before a sell-out screening in Piccadilly Circus.  We then zipped back up North for the final screening in Newcastle.  The day started poorly when we grabbed a spare hour to jump into the North Sea for a surf.  A friend of ours attempted a helicopter on his longboard, lost control and smashed into my face, fracturing my nose.  Luckily he was a top paramedic so he treated me on the spot but needless to say I wasn’t best pleased to face the limelight with stitches on my nose and a headache!

Despite the day’s disaster, however, my gorgeous Quiksilver Women La Luz dress, good makeup and the buzz of the night soon cheered me up and I completely forgot about the stitches.  While Zac Efron’s film played to a crowd of twelve, over two hundred packed into our screen on a Monday night and a crowd were even turned away.  The support we have had along the way has been incredible.  We even had great reviews on BBCs Film 24 and Radio 1 so it’s not just surfers who are appreciating the beauty of the sport, which was our intention all along.  Tomorrow it’s more TV in London and next week we are hoping to be in Bournemouth so keep an eye on www.waveridersthefilm.com

Tips from a Fashion Photographer

.

Taking pictures of you makes me want to eat tabbouleh.

.

We invited six of the top fashion bloggers to preview the Quiksilver Women’s spring line and style their own photo shoot. The photographer, Matt Wignall, was the one who captivated our attention. He works with Cold War Kids and other notable bands and his work is brilliant. This is what Wignall, a self-proclaimed “social lemon,” had to say about working with models. (He’s actually a good guy.)

Knowing what a photo should look like and how to use the software can really do a lot for you. -Matt Wignall, photographer

LA “It Girls” take on Summer with Quiksilver

The calendar is flying by and though spring is the first thing on the mind, don’t forget that summer is around the corner. Summer brings long lazy days, travels abroad and adventures around each corner.

.

To introduce this time of year and the fashion that comes with it, Quiksilver went once again to the LA “It Girls” for inspiration.

.

Krystal

Krystal channels a hippie happy girl from the 70’s with her floral crown singing the tunes of the summer to come. She layered the Quiksilver Monaco Jacket over the La Luz cami, all tucked into her high-waisted bell bottom jeans.

.

Hannah

Hannah creates a vintage-inspired look all her own in the Quiksilver Masai sleeveless dress. The details of her “bee-hive” hat and kitten heels make this all so fun and flirty.

.

Karla

Karla designs a timelessly-chic look mixing the Quiksilver Queenstown babydoll tank with contrasting skinny trousers. She adds her own dramatic flare with a floppy hat and statement shoes.

.

Beth

Beth dreams up a chic city vibe layering the Quiksilver Monaco jacket over the Loveland Army tee. She kept it sassy with a high-waisted sequin bandage skirt and piles of jewelry.

.

Rachel

Rachel paints the romantic essence of summer in the Quiksilver Lake Victoria dress. She gave it a contemporary twist with her bandage-like heels.

.

Taghrid

Taghrid pops in the Quiksilver Brits Fleece tunic. She gives the look a high fashion punch with her towering heels.

Every little bit counts!

Timo Jarvinen)

Ela in Fuerteventura's desert (photo: Timo Jarvinen)

.

I tend to judge people for their lack of awareness for Mother Nature. Especially our North American fellows. Why? Because until just recently, they simply were pretty easy victims to judge having an administration in their back that within eight years smashed everything that was built up to sensitize people for our environment so far. Well, after I came home from my February time-out in the United States filled with criticising each and everyone for their ignorant treatment of planet Earth (some of my friends even started calling me ‘Miss Negative’), I thought it was about time to mind my own business for once again and see how good or bad I was doing as far as environmental protection was concerned.
.
So I went into the worldwide web cheerfully (as I was a 100% sure my childhood in the middle of Switzerland’s beauty was a free ticket to lifelong environmental consciousness) searching for one of these websites on which you could calculate your carbon footprint. A move I happened to regret some good five minutes later when the website spat out the result of my test… What it said there on my screen made the little prestige I had left for myself go down the drain in one flush. I had hardly ever in my life felt equally embarrassed. I could feel the blush of shame creeping up my face when I slowly looked over my shoulder to make sure non of those oh so stupid Americans that I had just blamed for their ignorance, had sneaked into my room to accumulate evidence for my carbon footprint that was – big surprise – bigger than the US average…
.
Dammed! All the convictions I ever vouched for had just become a big fat burden grassing me as the ugly liar, the concept of an enemy of all environmentalists, the show-off that couldn’t even fulfil what she blamed others for. Trying to find the reason for my footprint that had turned from a baby’s into a giant’s shoe within half a year, my thoughts wandered back to a moment I had on a photo shooting with Quiksilver on Fuerteventura. A trip on which I got in touch with the Eco-friendly line of 2009’s summer collection for the first time. I was standing in the dry and waterless nature that is characteristic for the Canary Islands, wearing the Serengeti dress (100% organic cotton) and thinking to myself how ironic it was to pose out in the desert in a dress that had exactly been produced in an effort to prevent the world from turning into the type of drinking-water abandoned wasteland I was finding myself in at that very moment…
.
Not that I necessarily would have needed to fly to Fuerteventura to get reminded of how important conscious handling of our resources at least is to me, but sometimes it obviously takes a little more to wake us up. For me, if ever I see the Serengeti dress now hanging in my wardrobe though, I get reminded of how easy I can actually shrink my environmental shoe back to a little size if only I lived conscious and reminded myself every once in a while that…
.

.
→    I could bike instead of drive a car
→    there was no need to fly short distance if there are trains
→    I didn’t need to have my heating on in summer
→    it wasn’t worth being too lazy to separate waste
→    I didn’t need to have the lights on during daytime

→    electronic items had to be connected to the power point only while charging
→    I could turn off the water while soaping

→    I didn’t need Brazilian mangos if there were Swiss apples
→    organic fabrics could be just as trendy as synthetic ones
.

.

…and so on and so forth. The list of possibilities to support a sustainable development in the environmental discussion seems endless. But don’t worry, I’m not into missionary work and I don’t think I can change the world with my drivel, but a look on the Eco-friendly products of the Quiksilver Women’s summer line maybe shows you that you no longer need to dress like a hippie to live less wasteful but more conscious of our environment. Every little bit counts!
.
Or with Quiksilver’s words: Don’t destroy what you came to enjoy!
.
Ela (who would feel honoured to see the list from above continuing with your comments…)

Quiksilver Women likes Kate Lanphear

.

She is currently the Senior Style Editor at Elle magazine. She has a wicked sense of style that consists of grey, black, grey, white and grey. She does menswear-chic better than the men of GQ. Her signature platinum locks and razor sharp cut keep things modern. She is the definition of effortless - a few layered classic pieces, skinnies or harem pants, and killer shoes.
