Introducing Julie Boulanger

The face of an angel, a cheeky elegance, and a unique voice…introducing Julie, a woman of beauty, gentleness and creativity, and the newest ambassador for the Quiksilver women’s line.
Julie has the soul of a born entertainer and a multi-talented artist.  An actress since childhood, she now goes on stage with her band, Freckles. Their sound is a mixture of acoustic and rhythmic folk melodies, with her husky voice transporting us to an inspired, bohemian new world.

.

Tell us a little bit about yourself…
I was born on 26 October 1982 in Paris, and at 15, I was spotted by the director Alain Nahum and invited to star in “Des gens si bien élevés” with Michèle Morgan and Mélanie Thierry. Since then, my life has been all about acting, but also music and surfing too!
.
Where do you hope to go next in your artistic career?
I’m an actress and I’ll do everything I can to keep acting for the rest of my life…Right now I’m working on an album with my band Freckles, and that’s brand new! I’ve discovered the magic of concerts, being on stage with my music, it’s just incredible!
.
What does “creative” mean to you?
Letting your desires and emotions run free, having a different take on the things that happen in our lives and re-interpreting them!

Julie embodies Quiksilver Women's line spirit

What does the Quiksilver women’s line embody you?
Surfing, freedom, nature, travel, the gentle offshore wind and the power of the Atlantic waves…. But also the chance to express my art and my femininity through clothes that I like and that suit me!
.
What do you understand by “timeless”?
Something that crosses periods and fashions without anyone being able to put a date on it…something that’s outside social conventions, that will never be old-fashioned. Having a timeless beauty is a fabulous compliment.
.
What does “natural” mean for you?
Being natural is forgetting yourself…
.
What do you appreciate most in others?
Being natural and humble! I like people who are confident enough about life, human beings, and themselves not to see the bad side first, but instead to find an opportunity to enrich their lives in every experience they encounter!

Recording The ‘STORY’ Video in Hossegor

Anna wearing White Plain dress and Filmstrip scarf

A few weeks ago i jet setted back to hossegor to shoot the music video for “Story”! The video is basically me telling a story through polaroid pictures, i’m taking them throughout the video and there are a few quirky scenes with me surrounded by paper planes, climbing amongst the trees, rocks …. one small roof top! There are lots of scenes on the beach and of course i was wearing the Fall collection by Quiksilver Women!!! they are sooo beautiful!!!!

.

1st day of the video shoot was all on location, and it was such a nice day! Me and Tara were up at 6 and started make up at half past! First we headed into Bayonne, a beautiful town near Biarritz. We did some shots of me taking polaroids by the lighthouse and some shots by the sea! The town was really beautiful, too. We then did some shots of me in the car taking pictures on the road through the country side! there was one scene where we had two cars going alongside eachother, cameraman Dan in one, me in the other!!!! Was hard to keep a straight face!
It was a loooong day and we all caught a (reasonably) early night! =)

.

The next day was all about the lip syncing- it was quite a surreal thing to get my head around and i cant tell u how nervous i was!!! i wouldnt let anyone watch for the first hour i was so embarrased! but as the day went on i got more an more confident and just treated it as if it were a live performance and i think that helped a lot!   Here are some piccies!!! Cant Wait to Show you all the Video   :)

It won’t be summer much longer, and soon we will be creeping towards fall. This in between time can reek havoc on a girl’s closet. The stores are brimming with fall gems and your desires to wear shorts and sandals will decrease. Suddenly the thought of tights and boots seem so much more fun. What’s a girl to do? How do you start to mix in your new fall goodies with your summer lightweights?

.

Take a cue from It Girl, Krystal Simpson who didn’t shy away from wearing her favorite Quiksilver Women’s Summer Tank when it was a bit cooler outside. She flawlessly layered up her summer must-have with a cozy hoodie and the fall season’s statement jacket. A perfect blend of summer sizzle and fall funk.

Video shoot for my song ‘Apple’

Ellie wearing the Quiksilver Women Catacomb Tee and the Twisted Fate vest

.
Shot a video on Thursday for my song “Apple”.

It was great fun!! Started at 8am with Nicole and Lindsay doing my hair and make-up. Had GMTV on the TV in the backgroup whilst listening to the Kooks and Nicole was pointing to the presenters hair on the TV, which she had styled a few hours before mine!

The production team get busy

Turned up at the industrial location, which we had scouted a week before and the manager there said that we couldn’t shoot there. Have you heard of a ‘jobs worth’ well he had the T-shirt, cup and book. We had to find a new location on the fly, and my wonderful production team of 10 people walked all around the industrial estate and found some where even better! Hooray!! Big and eternal thanks

the band balance themselves..

Band on a branch..

to the very creative and professional Kaspar, (director) Twan, (producer and editor) Christine (director of photography) and all the hard working crew on this shoot. Thank you to Marta and Julie for the wicked clothes and for helping making it happen. We shot lots of scenes in the industrial location- like inside a big container, walking by the barbed wire and then we moved to the park to shoot the end of the video with my band, Dave, Hils and Giles.

.

Giles, my bass player, travelled all the way from France to be in the video, but had forgotten something: His bass! Not a big deal for our creative and down too earth Giles. He went off to the garden centre and came back with a Skiffle bass, made from a metal bucket, a broomstick and some string!! Look closely at the pic! (click to enlarge)

Here’s a video of the making of Apple. YouTube Preview Image

.

We have a brilliant animator called Nacho working on the video and he will be drawing all over the film. Very excited!! We are aiming for it to be finished by August 14th.

Ellie’s gig at Camden Enterprise

Had a fantastic gig at The Camden Enterprise in London on Thursday night! Opened up for Australian singer songwriter Kate Miller Heidke and was blown away by her set. She did a funny song about Facebook and not wanting to add someone and sporadically broke out into opera! Her song ‘caught in the crowd’ is very catchy and It’s so inspiring to hear female singer songwriters with this much talent. She is a lovely girl as well and we did a CD swap at the end of the night. I really enjoyed my set with my favourite people Dave on guitar/djembe and Hils on keys. My aunt was there and it was the first time she had ever heard me sing! It’s always strange singing to your family for some reason! Really enjoyed the night even though It was sooo unbelievably hot at the Enterprise as its upstairs and the temperature that day was in the 30s! Summer in the city! Thanks to Chantelle Flanagan for this photo! Will post video to my myspace page asap!

.

Next up I am making my music video for my song Apple on Thursday at an industrial location. So excited, got a great team of people and some wicked clothes from the Fall-Winter QS women collection to wear!!

.

I’m playing a festival this weekend on the Saturday night at 8pm, its a private festival, with about 2,000 people there. Will be camping and chillin galore. Yeayyy.

.

Lots of love

No games needed!

I am not a drama queen. I say this after having reflected long and intensively on my own psyche. I might be a drama court jester but since there is not even a term for this sort of low-ranked drama queen invented yet, I dare to say that little me generally doesn’t get numbered among the drama royal court at all. I usually master my emotions and I don’t loose control easily. Usually. Well, I’m not going to lie here. As I said, drama court jester. There are moments in which I tend to go out of my depth. I have a feeling it has something to do with a slight dysfunction of my suprarenal gland as the immensely predominance of make-me-whine-oestrogen on crying-is-for-babies-testosterone in my body is out of question in these certain moments. Call it natural for females, but as much as I love to be a woman, I could easily go without turning into a cranky crybaby whenever I get involved with an antagonist playing on the crying-is-for-babies-testosterone-team. In short, Ela turning into a drama court jester is not a daily life, but much more a love matter.

Smile like a baby! (photo: Timo Jarvinen)

The other day then, when my body’s production of oestrogen experienced another boom (due to the lack of sensitivity of some testosterone junkie of course), I decided to misuse one of my crying-is-for-babies-but-my-shoulder-is-always-here-for-you-testosterone-friends to dry my baby tears and get some advice of how to get over premature midlife crises. After having listened to my probably rather incomprehensible whining, this well-appreciated strong shoulder of a friend told me to get over myself and finally learn how to play hot and cold in love matters on a decent but best of all professional level. According to him, playing hot and cold was the warp and the woof when it came down to interpersonal relations between make-me-whine-oestrogen and crying-is-for-babies-testosterone. «You know love is sort of like playing hide-and-seek», he told me, «Not fun to hide when there is no one seeking, and not fun to seek when there is no one hiding. You need to keep the fun in the game by doing the exact opposite of what your counterpart is doing».

.
In this very moment, this explanation was just what I needed: The simple thought of it kept me from bursting out crying again and this was obviously all my dear friend (running out of Kleenex at the time) was aiming for. A toast to him! Anyway, not that I wouldn’t appreciate my friends’ advices but thinking of it clear-headed now makes this whole hot and cold deal turn into a senseless leisure activity that in that very moment only had the function of a well-meant verbal tranquillizer. Seriously, how in this world could a man and a woman ever get together if they had to play cold as soon as the other one played hot and vice versa? Or then, how can they know when the time had come to stop the game? Right before they get too bored playing? Just like back in the day when hide-and-seek kept us up until all the possible hiding places were tested out and got too boring?
.
Not only that I hoped to gain more from love than boredom, but also that I can’t understand why I should make something rather complicated such as love even more complicated, this whole hot and cold thing is not of my taste. My strong shoulder friend can do it his way, I for me rather abandon myself to my true emotions and cry like a baby now than waking up one day as an iceberg that does no longer feel like metamorphosing into a fireball. No games needed in my love life, and I will proof the world one day that love can make things work like that, too… one day!
.
